Breeches, Breggings and Zeggings...OH MY!

Breeches, Breggings and Zeggings...OH MY!

Find out the difference between riding breeches, breggings and zeggings.

As a parent of a beginner rider or a vintage competitor, oftentimes, equestrian apparel lingo can be downright confusing.  What in the world is the difference between a breech and a bregging, let alone a zegging!

Everyday here in the shop with customers, we highlight the qualities of full-seat versus knee patch pants in addition to how riding pants should fit and feel.  We also discuss the controversy of which silicon pant may damage your saddle (for the record we don’t carry the type that do!). In the sing-song voice of the Wizard of Oz, “Follow the Anytime Blog, Follow the Anytime Blog!”  where we will translate “Breeches and Breggings and Zeggings…Oh My!” as well as many other topics.

In general, riding pants come in various styles, including full-seat, knee-patch, and euro-seat designs, each offer different levels of grip and support specifically crafted for the rider and discipline. Full-seat pants have a reinforced seat-to-knee area for maximum grip in the saddle, while knee-patch versions feature patches of grippy material just on the knees for added stability.

The most commonly known riding pants are breeches.  Breeches originated as standard riding attire, typically they are made from durable materials like cotton or synthetic blends. Traditional breeches feature a higher waistband, often with belt loops, to ensure they stay in place during rides. All riding pants vary in waist heights and bottom closures.  Just like jeans, waist heights range from mid-rise to high rise.  Kids and teens generally prefer a lower to mid rise, where other body types like a higher rise.  Thankfully, uncomfortable ankle closures with velcro are in the past.  Nearly all modern riding pants have a “footless sock bottom” aka lycra around the ankles to keep the pants in place and inside a boot.  Our customers find this modern version superior to the scratchy velcro bottom.  Breech material is usually more substantial with a formal structured appeal.  Breeches have a button type enclosure as well as a zipper and belt loops.  Front and back pockets are optional.

Breggings are essentially a modern hybrid of a breech and legging that creates a versatile less formal option for riders. Breggings are made from a sturdy but stretchy, lighter and breathable fabric like spandex or a combination of technical materials.  They provide a snug yet comfortable fit. Breggings typically feature the same design elements as traditional breeches, such as knee patches or full-seat panels, but with a sleeker silhouette and enhanced flexibility.  The biggest difference between a breech and bregging is that breggings are pull-ons, like a legging.  Breggings do not have a zipper or enclosure, but may have pockets and/or belt loops.

One of the key benefits of breggings is their ability to transition from barn chores to the saddle.  Breggings combine the equestrian style and athleisure comfort making them a popular choice among riders who value both fashion and function.

Zeggings feature a high-tech breathable stretchy fabric with a reinforced waistband, button enclosure and zipper.  They are a mid-rise pant with belt loops, a hidden cellphone pocket and other faux pockets for detailing.  A honeycomb full seat pattern adds extra eye catching zing and stick.  Zeggings have been a shop favorite in all age brackets since their arrival this year.

Additionally, zeggings include thoughtful design details such as reinforced stitching and strategically placed seams to ensure durability and comfort during long hours in the saddle or doing barn chores.
